In the 20th century, master artists such as Picasso, Brâncuși, and Matisse were inspired by African art, transforming it into a new possibility within their own work. Now, in 2018, contemporary artist 曾上杰 (Zeng Shangjie) expresses his feelings towards the environment and his own inner world through his sculptural creations. In his studio on a mountain, what sparks will arise when his inspiration from nature collides with African art?

After graduating from graduate school in 2016, Zeng Shangjie relocated his studio from Banqiao to a mountain in Sanxia. He recounts several experiences where he left the studio late at night, only to find himself surrounded by darkness, with his phone's flashlight revealing swarms of insects. The mountain’s high humidity causes a thin, foggy layer of water to form on his motorcycle seat, and when the headlights are on, spiders have already spun webs on the headlights in the daytime. The loud, sharp sounds of insects, the pitch-black darkness, wild dogs by the roadside, and the damp scent of the air after rain—all these sensations remind him of his own insignificance in such an environment. Riding down the mountain, especially in sections of the road without streetlights, he experiences the feeling of being completely swallowed by the dark. However, it is this total darkness that makes the stars and the moon in the night sky stand out clearly. As he descends further, the lights of the city become more apparent, and he returns to the urban world. This series of experiences inspired his exhibition, “Before Darkness Falls, Descend the Mountain”.

At 44 GALLERY, we seek the possibility of dialogue between contemporary art and African art. We invited artist Zeng Shangjie because of his unique expression of elongating and deforming shapes in his sculptures, creating a powerful tension in his work. This element of tension in his work resonates with the distinct aesthetics created in African art. We are excited to see what kind of dialogue and sparks will emerge when these two art forms meet.

Inspired by the 2013 exhibition at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, “Pact x Artists — 220 Collaborative Project,” 44 GALLERY began contemplating the potential for collaboration with African art. While African art is a relatively rare field in Asia, it has had a significant influence in Western countries since the 20th century. Many master artists, including Picasso, Brâncuși, and Matisse, were inspired by African art, transforming it into new possibilities in their works. We hope that through the intersection of contemporary art and African art, new visual dialogues and vocabularies can emerge.
