『 最深的河 / The deepest river 』
Opening 8/17 Sat. 15:00 - 18:00 (開幕茶會)

In the 20th century, great artists such as Picasso, Brâncuși, and Matisse were inspired by tribal art and transformed it into a new possibility in their works...
Zheng Nongxuan - Unlike the content of my past works, I conducted a small African research due to the special texture of the exhibition space. In fact, my understanding of this continent almost comes from Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" which I read during my student years. I am like the protagonist Marlow in the book, exploring from the perspective of an outsider. Through digital and online research, I embark on an unknown adventure, riding the flow of water, gradually entering the Dark Continent.
The exhibition title "The Deepest River" refers to the Congo River, which is indeed the deepest river in the world. It originates from the high mountain areas of the East African Rift Valley, running through the heart of Africa and flowing westward into the Atlantic Ocean. The river basin's rainforest is one of the most biologically diverse and dense areas in the world. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the two sides of the river basin were divided by European colonial powers, and the Congo River became one of the Western world’s trade and exploration routes. This exhibition presents a visual narrative about the species, empires, civilizations, and nature surrounding the river.
44 GALLERY (Xiao Ba Lang) - We are exploring the potential for a dialogue between contemporary art and African art. Just like the artist Zheng Nongxuan, who named the exhibition "The Deepest River" inspired by Africa's Congo River. For 44 GALLERY, it also presents a different visual representation of the mysterious tribal spirit and an imagination about the distant origin of human ancestors. This time, the artist draws creative inspiration from the human environment developed around the Congo River, which is different from his previous works focused on human figures. We hope to see what kind of different dialogue and sparks arise when the two worlds meet and resonate.
Through different collaborative exhibitions, 44 GALLERY seeks to present these two art fields. Inspired by the "Pact x Artist - 220 Collaboration Project" held at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 2013, 44 GALLERY began to explore the possibility of collaborating with African art. African art is a rare field in Asia, but in European and American countries, many great masters of art, including Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncuși, and Henri Matisse, were inspired by African art and transformed it into new possibilities in their works. Therefore, we hope to create new linguistic possibilities and visual dialogues by intersecting contemporary art and African art.
Address: 202, Section 1, Jianguo South Road, Taipei City. MRT: Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station, Exit 3. 5-minute walk. Near the intersection of Jianguo South Road and Jinan Road.
