部落的椅凳.造型上來說,區分為抽象主義與象徵主義,不同的部落有他們慣有傳承的造型脈絡。一般來說,象徵性的椅凳,無非希望透過動物或其他的形象進而獲的相同的力量與期待,抽象性的椅凳,大多直覺式的表現出對於造型美感的看法。

人類為表現審美、信仰、地位、與象徵,而有各種藝術的創作,又因環境的不同而產生不同的適應生活方式。椅凳是非洲傳統文化的載體,而非洲傢俱靈感基本都源自於大自然,這些靈感來自於動物,樹木和土壤。據歷史記載,大部分在非洲部落和文化始終認為,人類真正的權力是來自於樹木,河流,石頭和土壤或強大的動物。

在非洲許多部族文化中,椅凳是極私人的物件,被視為靈魂的載體。因此,每個人都視自己的椅凳為珍寶。生活中必不可少的椅凳也日益成為擁有者權力和社會地位的象徵。在一些部族中,只有部族首領、巫醫、權貴等人才能擁有自己的椅凳。除此之外,在人們追求返璞歸真、崇尚自然的今天,很多現代傢俱也融合了部落元素在裡面,在衝突中產生平衡,散發著古樸自然的氣息,與使用者的生活融為一體。顏色自然樸實且質感強,使居室充滿悠閒、舒暢、寧靜的自然氛圍。

漫畫家幾米曾說:『椅子是每一個人的位置,在社會中的位置,每一個椅子則代表了人在世界的一種位置,一把椅子往往可以反應眾生萬相。』這一點我們可以從中國古代的椅子可以明顯看出,家具甚至是禮儀和階級名分的象徵。首先,中國的椅子階級高於凳子,其次靠背椅(泛指有靠背的椅子)的階級高於扶手椅(無靠背的椅子),靠背椅中的寶座是專供帝王使用,象徵著最高統治者至高無上、獨一無二的權力和地位象徵。

對於椅子,體現社會地位而非舒適性,曾長時間佔據人們的觀念。Galen Cranz在其著述《椅子》(The
Chair)中闡述椅子發展史時曾提到,相當長的時間裡,"
放眼世界,"椅子"和"坐在椅子上"已經成為了一種象徵。無論東方與西方,椅子的含義雖不相同,但都表示地位和身份。非洲椅凳普遍高度約在8到30公分之間,相較於現今椅子高度約40到50公分的範圍低矮了許多。這樣的坐椅高度和非洲廣泛採用的蹲坐姿勢相吻合,同時反映了他們在地面上生活和工作的自然寫照。

在椅凳中,凡舉非洲座椅從寫實的、具象的到半具象、抽象的表現,純熟地變換和運用,形式繁多。椅凳以簡潔明朗的外觀,剛柔並存。木料保留原始的疤結、殘邊和裂縫,在著色前都經過了處理,讓原始木材表面的質地凸顯,那種樸實無華的美感增添原始的質樸特性。此外,可從衣索比亞的十字造型符號的座椅,追溯於西元四世紀時即接受基督教的洗禮,是一個具有悠久和豐富的基督教傳統的國家。典雅的十字造型,不單彰顯其過去的歷史,亦可表達抽象而神聖的宗教意涵。另外,馬里的多貢人將凳面視為天、凳底視為地,而凳面與凳底之間的支架則像徵大樹,連接天地。非洲部落裡,他們把自然資源與他們自己的想像力結合起來,創作出獨有的原始力量的作品。

1995年夏天,Hans SandgrenJakobsen《漢斯·雅各布森》參觀了一個關於非洲文化的展覽,無意中發現了幾張來自剛果及象牙海岸部落的座椅,除了華麗的裝飾性雕刻花紋外,他還發現簡單的實木彎折技術,回到工作室後,立刻以整片長方形硬紙板,設計出具有二次直角轉折的三面向原型椅,但遍尋丹麥各地傢俱廠商,卻沒有一家願意生產,因為當時曲木技術尚無法完成如此複雜的大角度轉折,然而丹麥皇室御用傢俱品牌FREDERICIA最終卻被Hans
SandgrenJakobsen的誠意打動,經過無數次試驗後,終於在1998年以十片0.8公釐薄、53×125公分的實木板膠合,並將材質張力與曲木技術發揮至極限,完成此張名為Gallery、一推出便囊括世界各大設計獎項的驚人作品。

become their power and a symbol of social status for the life. In some
tribes, only the tribal leaders, worship, witch doctors, dignitaries
and other people can have their own bench. What is more in the pursuit
of back to nature, respect for nature today, many modern furniture
integration and African elements in it, seeking a balance in the
conflict, natural atmosphere exudes simplicity, integration with the
user's life . Natural colors and textures strong , it make the room
full of leisurely, relaxed, serene natural atmosphere.
