www.facebook.com/44GALLERY

Subjective value exists in the heart of each individual, and currency is simply an easy way to measure it. The results of exchanges reflect the differences in how each person values things. We invite you to participate in this experience and explore the exchange of African tribal art!

In 2020, we will continue with our "search program." The inspiration for this project mainly comes from the simple joy of exchanging marbles for stickers when I was a child. We hope to explore different perspectives on the value of objects through exchange. Throughout the process, we will discover that "object for object" exchanges are interesting because they are not rigidly defined by price concepts.

Economist Adam Smith (1723–1790) once pointed out that "before the advent of money, people exchanged seven chickens for one sheep or one sack of grain for a pair of sandals." In fact, what is exchanged is not only physical items but also intangible aspects like identity, respect, and emotions. We hope that more tribal artworks will find their owners, bringing new interest into everyday life. "Exchange" does not have to mean an equal price but emphasizes the importance of "psychological value."

Exhibition Results
The way the works will be presented will involve pairing up corresponding artworks—those that have been found and those that have been sought—and they will be displayed together to present a different visual possibility and dialogue. For us, the search program is about exchanging things that we like. When we like something, it creates a value in our hearts. If we don’t like something, no matter how expensive it is, it only holds value for its current owner.

Looking back at the 2019 search program...
We found 29 new owners, and we are delighted that everyone enjoyed this special project. Both the participants and the gallery gained a sense of "collecting satisfaction." Regarding the results exhibition, we aim to present a different visual experience. During the exchange process, participants exchanged various forms of works, such as paintings, sculptures, photography, etc. What’s interesting is that the spirit of exchange itself is not measured by monetary value. Instead, it can be experienced through different forms, feeling the intangible inner values that are attached to recognition, respect, and emotions, returning to the simple act of object exchange.

Xiao Ba Lang 44 GALLERY will exhibit 50 pieces of tribal art for exchange, which will be announced on the 44 GALLERY Facebook page.
