--You considered themselves to be equal value items to exchange, it is the spirit of barter."

Annual Project:
  1. Only barter exchanges are accepted!!
  2. Document a meaningful exhibition that reflects value comparison.

Everyone has their own subjective value judgments, and currency is just one of the more commonly understood ways to measure value. Through the “Exchange a Gift” plan, we hope to reflect and record the interesting differences in how we each define value. We invite everyone to participate!!!

We will announce and exhibit 48 African tribal art pieces available for exchange starting on October 28, and the list will also be posted on the "小巴廊 (44 GALLERY) Facebook Fan Page".

In early African tribes, "barter" was the main form of trade. When engaging in barter, honesty and trust were of particular importance, especially during "silent trades" between tribes and ethnic groups who couldn't speak the same language. Barter was not just a simple exchange of equal value; sometimes it was a reflection of how we each measure value in our hearts. Beautiful shells and glass beads were used as currency, circulating between many African tribes.

In the late 19th century, during his travels in East Africa, Qing Dynasty's Ding Lian recorded, “In the market, there is no use of silver or coins, and instead, shells are used as a currency.” In the Hausa city-states of West Africa, merchants used cloth, salt, and even slaves as currency in their trade. Ethiopia and Congo, known for copper, began to use copper-cast cross-shaped currencies. For this reason, 44 GALLERY hopes to evoke the most primitive tribal spirit by using goods to exchange goods. Bring what you consider of equal value from your heart, and experience the tribal trading of Africa!

Due to high competition, it is recommended to choose two pieces of art.
