We hope to use the most primal tribal spirit, exchanging items for items of perceived equal value, to experience African tribal trading! Subjective value resides in the individual’s heart, with money being just an easily understandable measure. The outcome of the exchange reflects the fun differences in how each person perceives value.
We invite you to join us in experiencing African tribal trading!
The 2018 Exchange Program will continue the quest for new discoveries... The inspiration mainly comes from the simple joy of exchanging marbles and stickers as a child. Through the exchange process, we aim to explore different value perceptions of objects. What's interesting about "object-to-object" exchange is that it’s not defined by fixed price concepts. As economist Adam Smith (1723-1790) once pointed out, "Before there was money, people would exchange seven chickens for a sheep or a bag of grain for a pair of sandals." In fact, what is exchanged isn’t just physical items, but also intangible things like recognition, respect, and emotion.
We hope that more tribal artworks will find their rightful owners and bring new joy into life. The exchange process doesn't need to equate price, but emphasizes the importance of "psychological value."
"2018 - Searching for 42 Gifts" Special Exhibition - The exhibition will display exchanged works in pairs, presenting tribal art alongside the exchanged items. This will offer a new visual dialogue and perspective.
For us, exchange is about finding things we truly like. When you like something, that's when value is created in your heart. If you don’t like it, even if it's expensive, it remains valuable only to its owner.
A Look Back at the 2017 Exchange Program...
Last year, we successfully exchanged 29 works. We are pleased that everyone liked this special project, and each participant experienced the satisfaction of "collecting." The exhibition also presented different visual experiences. Through the exchange process this year, participants engaged in exchanging works in various forms, such as paintings, sculptures, photography, or cast-iron and leather chairs. What’s interesting is that the spirit of exchange itself isn’t measured by monetary value, but through various forms, allowing us to feel the intangible values of recognition, respect, and emotion that are attached to it, returning to the simple essence of object-to-object exchange.
The 44GALLERY will display 42 tribal artworks as exchange items, and these will be announced on the 44GALLERY Facebook page.
