The 100th exhibition is not only a retrospective, but also a celebration of this important milestone. Little Bar Gallery celebrates its 100th exhibition with the curatorial theme “100: 10 × 10.” At the heart of the exhibition is a ten-figure pillar sculpture from the Dogon people of Mali, West Africa. Alongside it, one representative work is selected from every ten exhibitions throughout the gallery’s history, bringing together nine iconic works and the ten-figure pillar sculpture in a dialogue across time. The ten selected representative works mark significant milestones from every ten exhibitions in the gallery’s history. Like the ten figures of the Dogon sculpture, each work carries its own creative theme, cultural exploration, and curatorial memory. Reunited within the same space, they become more than a retrospective; together, they form a trajectory across time, reflecting Little Bar Gallery’s continued dedication to African tribal art. This retrospective is not simply a celebration of the 100th exhibition, but also a tribute to every artwork, every encounter, and every moment shared along the way. These works are not simply representations of individuals or objects; they embody visual expressions of cultural life, social order, and ways of understanding the world. Originating from the tea culture and Zen philosophy of Japan’s Muromachi period, Wabi-Sabi is an aesthetic perspective centered on time, imperfection, and natural transformation. Wabi suggests simplicity, quietness, and a balance found within imperfection, while Sabi refers t the weathered, worn, and tranquil qualities left behind by the passage of time. Rather than pursuing perfection or polished beauty, Wabi-Sabi finds meaning in cracks,emptiness, aging, and incompleteness. Over time, this philosophy expanded into architecture, contemporary art, photography, and spatial design, inspiring creators to reconsider the value of&nbsp; imperfection. The three works presented in this exhibition extend the lens of Wabi-Sabi into the realm of African tribal art. These sculptures and masks have undergone decades of use and natural weathering. Their surfaces bear cracks, losses, abrasions, and rough textures. Such marks are not viewed as damage, but as another form of carving—one created by time and lived experience. Igbo Female Figure This Igbo female sculpture is characterized by its highly vertical proportions, elongated torso, and extended posture, creating a strong sense of solemnity and presence. The tightly clenched fists convey restrained physical tension and inner strength. Across the surface, extensiv&nbsp; weathering, cracks, and worn textures reveal incomplete edges and natural losses transforming the sculpture into a visible record of everything it has endured through time. Makonde Helmet Mask The Makonde helmet mask is constructed through a solid and rounded realism. Its prominent nose, half-closed eyes, and full lips create a calm and contemplative expression. The facial features are significantly simplified, forming a geometric language reminiscent of modern sculpture. Compressed contours and subtle asymmetries position the figure between realism and abstraction. The losses around both ears and the weathered lower cheeks further intensif the visual tension of the work, emphasizing the beauty of transformation rather than preservation. Baulé Red Disc Mask The Baulé red disc mask is defined by its symmetrical circular forms, expressed through both the horns and the face. Strong geometric proportions and the contrast between vivid red pigment and weathered surfaces create a striking visual presence. Traditionally appearing as one of the first characters in community celebrations, the mask symbolizes the awakening of primordial natural forces. Imperfections resembling tears in woven fabric allow light and shadow to penetrate the surface, giving the work a distinctive totemic quality and a powerful sculptural presence. In many African cultures, animals are not merely part of the natural world; they are regarded as symbols of primordial forces of nature and the collective spirit of the community. Leopards, lions, antelopes, and various imagined mythical creatures frequently appear in carvings, masks, and ritual objects. These forms represent courage, protection, and power, while also embodying the profound and sacred relationship between humans and nature. Through these symbolic meanings, the invisible spiritual world is transformed into tangible artistic forms, allowing mythical beasts to become an essential medium of culture and belief. Such animal symbolism also recalls the imagery conveyed in the story of Noah‘s Ark. When the world was faced with flood and chaos, animals were gathered into the Ark preserving the continuity of life and the balance of nature. When these body masks from African tribal culture enter a contemporary space, their warm materials and concise, powerful forms engage in a quiet and elegant dialogue with the architectural order and surrounding negative space. The works move beyond cultural representation to become symbols of spatial refinement and aesthetic sensibility—embodiments of beauty that speak of the body, life, and time. Within a contemporary context, these masks invite viewers to experience a cross-cultural resonance through a more open and attentive gaze. These Makonde pregnancy masks are not merely artworks; they are aesthetic presences capable of coexisting with space. Their restrained forms and the traces of time embedded in the material bring warmth and depth to modern interiors. When placed within clean architectural structures, the bodily curves and sense of weight expressed by the masks lend the space a heightened balance and quiet profundity. Special exhibition of achievements』 交換的作品都到齊了，感謝今年所有 的參與者，共找到14個主人，很高興大家喜歡這個特別企 劃，一起獲得「 交換 &amp; 收集 」的趣味。 成果展方面希望呈現多重混合的視覺。作品有以黑陶塑造出沉靜與花海的貓、漂浮島嶼與迷宮 地景交織出超現實、栩栩如生的寫實靜物橘子、充滿童話感的繽紛彩虹BB、青綠色方形古玉、 代表性的潮流藝術小青、乳白色鑲金邊的典雅茶道具、暗黑異想的豹騎士攝影肖像、如同宇宙 空間的複合媒材、造型極煉的跳舞鳥人、繽紛華金的標本系列、神秘的叢林女子、理性與線條 交織的抽象空間、童趣與立體結合……等。 這些多元的交換緣分，能感受到無形的內在價值所附加的認同、尊重及情感，回到純樸的物物 交換。「在沒有貨幣之前，人們會用七隻雞交換一頭羊，或者用一袋穀物交換涼鞋。」交換計 畫，是尋找彼此喜歡的東西，將非洲部落藝術轉為交換到的作品是一種流動，延伸出更多的可 能性與對話。 很幸運能夠找到喜愛它們的主人，融入他們的生活，帶來一些新的感受。 2025 Exchange Program – Special Exhibition of Achievements All the items exchanged have arrived. Thank you to all the participants this year; we found 14 owners in total. We’re delighted everyone enjoyed this special project and the fun of ”exchanging and collecting“ together. The exhibition aims to present a multifaceted visual experience. The works include a cat sculpted from black pottery, serene amidst a sea of flowers; a surreal still life of oranges interwoven with floating islands and a maze-like landscape; a fairytale-like rainbow BB; a square piece of ancient jade in a turquoise hue; a representative trendy art piece; elegant tea utensils in milky white with gold trim; a dark and whimsical photographic portrait of a leopard rider; composite media reminiscent of outer space; a meticulously crafted dancing bird; a series of specimens in vibrant gold; a mysterious jungle woman; an abstract space where rationality and lines intertwine; and a combination of childlike wonder and three- dimensionality… and more. These diverse exchanges allow us to feel the intangible intrinsic value, the recognition, respect, and emotion attached to them, returning to the simple joys of bartering. ”Before the advent of currency, people would trade seven chickens for a sheep, or a sack of grain for sandals.“ The exchange program, a search for things each other appreciates, transforms African tribal art into exchanged works of art—a fluid process that extends into more possibilities and dialogues. This exhibition centers on the Dogon tribe’s anthropomorphic sculptures from Africa and the 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle baseball card, exploring how “imperfection” becomes a shared aesthetic language across different cultur es. Revered as the “Mona Lisa of baseball cards,” this piece not only embodies the ultimate symbol and rarity in the history of collectible cards but also reflects the glorious era of Mickey Mantle and the New York Yankees.
